Start the FAFSA® form at fafsa.gov Go to fafsa.gov and click "Start Here" under the "New to FAFSA.gov?" heading. Once on the log-in page, you will see two options. If you are starting the FAFSA form on behalf of your child, choose the option on the right, "I am a parent, preparer, or student from a Freely Associated State."

Reporting Parent Information If you are considered a dependent student for FAFSA ® purposes, you will need to provide information about your legal parent(s) on the application. A legal parent is your biological or adoptive parent, or your legal parent as determined by the state (for example, if the parent is listed on your birth certificate).
Select the month and day of your date of birth (DOB). Please make sure your selection exactly matches the DOB on file with the Social Security Administration.
The FAFSA form asks for financial information, including information from tax forms and balances of savings and checking accounts. The 2019-20 FAFSA form, which became available Oct. 1, 2018, asks for 2017 tax information. If you are filling out the 2018-19 FAFSA form, you will need 2016 tax information.
